What This Blend Provides, and Safety Points Worth Adding
This product combines organic spirulina and organic chlorella, two nutrient-dense algae with genuinely different safety profiles worth understanding separately. As covered in more detail in our spirulina guide, spirulina is genuinely notable for its complete amino acid profile and antioxidant compounds — though “chlorophyll for natural detoxification” isn’t an accurate description of how the body actually eliminates waste; the liver and kidneys handle this continuously regardless of algae intake.
A few genuine safety points worth adding, since none are mentioned in this product’s description: spirulina is grown in open ponds, making contamination from toxic cyanobacteria species and heavy metals a real, quantified risk — a 2020 multi-laboratory survey found nearly a quarter of tested algae supplements contained unsafe microcystin levels. Anyone with phenylketonuria (PKU) should avoid spirulina entirely, given its meaningful phenylalanine content. Both spirulina and chlorella have genuine immune-stimulating properties, so anyone with an autoimmune condition should check with their GP before use, given documented case reports of flares associated with these algae specifically.
On blood-thinning medication specifically, this combination is worth particular care: chlorella is high in vitamin K, which can genuinely reduce warfarin’s effectiveness — a documented case report describes a patient’s warfarin control becoming unstable after starting chlorella. Spirulina, separately, has its own mild blood-thinning properties. Combining both in one product means potentially opposing effects on anticoagulant medication, which makes this a genuinely more complex situation to manage than either algae alone — if you take warfarin or any other blood-thinning medication, this needs a direct conversation with your GP before starting, not a general caution.
Chlorella can also increase skin sensitivity to sunlight in some people, worth being mindful of with sun exposure.
