An Important, Balanced Note on Reishi and Liver Health
Red Reishi Mushroom Extract provides a concentrated 5:1 Ganoderma lucidum extract, equivalent to 10,000mg of raw reishi across the full 4-capsule daily serving, standardised to 35% polysaccharides — beta-glucans, along with triterpenes, are the compounds studied for reishi’s immune-modulating properties.
It’s accurate that reishi-related liver toxicity is rare — but it’s worth being more complete about this than “extremely rare when taken as directed” alone conveys, as covered in more detail in our medicinal mushroom guide. Documented case reports of acute liver injury associated with reishi exist, including a systematic review in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, and these appear strongly linked to specific risk factors: high doses, continuous use over months without breaks, combining reishi with alcohol, or use in people with pre-existing liver conditions. The absolute risk is low — documented cases number in the dozens against millions of users worldwide — but if you drink alcohol regularly, have an existing liver condition, or plan to use reishi daily for more than a couple of months (which this product’s suggested ongoing daily use represents), it’s worth mentioning this to your GP, with periodic liver function blood tests a reasonable, inexpensive precaution for extended use.
Two further safety points worth knowing: reishi has mild blood-thinning properties in some research and may interact with anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication — worth discussing with your GP if you take blood thinners or have surgery scheduled. And because of its immune-modulating properties, anyone with an autoimmune condition or taking immunosuppressant medication should check with their GP before use.
Claims about specific benefits for women’s hormonal balance and skin appearance rest on more limited, preliminary evidence than reishi’s core research areas (immune modulation, stress adaptation, sleep), and are worth reading as areas of interest rather than established effects.
Capsules are free from artificial colours, flavours, or preservatives, with rice flour as a minimal flow agent. Take 4 capsules daily with a meal. Speak to your GP before starting if you drink alcohol regularly, have a liver condition, take blood-thinning medication, have an autoimmune condition, or have an existing health condition.
