What Montmorency Cherry Research Actually Shows
This product provides 120mg of 50:1 concentrated Montmorency cherry (Prunus cerasus) extract per capsule, equivalent to 6000mg of cherry powder across the 2-capsule daily serving. Montmorency cherries are one of the richer natural food sources of melatonin, with genuine research support for sleep specifically — research using tart cherry juice found associations with increased sleep duration and improved sleep quality, though it’s worth knowing most of this research used juice rather than concentrated extract, so exact dosing equivalence between the two isn’t fully established.
Gout and uric acid is genuinely one of Montmorency cherry’s better-supported research areas — worth knowing this more specifically than “wellness goals” framing suggests.
A well-known 2012 study found cherry consumption associated with a 35% reduction in gout attack risk, and a systematic review of six studies found a consistent positive correlation between cherry intake and reduced uric acid levels and gout flare-ups. That said, the evidence isn’t entirely uniform — a more recent 2024 study found tart cherry powder didn’t blunt the uric acid spike that follows a high-purine meal specifically, so this is a genuinely promising but not universally consistent area of research. If you have diagnosed gout, cherry extract is worth discussing with your GP as a possible complement to prescribed urate-lowering treatment, not a replacement for it.
Montmorency cherry’s anti-inflammatory compounds (anthocyanins) are also studied in relation to exercise recovery, with more mixed findings than the sleep and gout research above.
Worth knowing: speak to your GP before regular use if you take medication affecting blood sugar, given cherry’s natural sugar content in some research contexts, or if you take blood-thinning medication, given mild effects on platelet function reported in some research.
