What Magnesium L-Threonate Research Actually Shows
Magnesium L-threonate (patented as Magtein, developed from MIT research) is studied for its ability to raise magnesium levels in brain tissue more effectively than other magnesium forms, based on its capacity to cross the blood-brain barrier. As covered in more detail in our complete magnesium guide, it’s worth being precise about the evidence here: the foundational 2010 study establishing this mechanism (published in Neuron) was conducted in rats, and while some human research exists — including a study on cognitive function in healthy adults — human evidence remains genuinely more limited than the animal research it’s often cited alongside.
The claim that Andrew Huberman recommends Magtein for sleep is accurate — the Stanford neuroscientist has discussed magnesium L-threonate extensively on his podcast as part of a “sleep cocktail” alongside L-theanine and apigenin, and his own stated dose (around 145mg elemental magnesium, roughly 2g of Magtein) closely matches this product’s 151mg elemental magnesium per serving. It’s worth adding one nuance this product’s description doesn’t mention: Huberman specifically recommends starting with one supplement at a time to gauge individual response, rather than combining all three from the outset, which is worth keeping in mind if you’re building a similar stack yourself.
Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions generally, with established roles in muscle function, nerve transmission, and normal energy metabolism, alongside the more specific brain-focused research above.
Around 5% of people may experience mild digestive discomfort with L-threonate, generally less than with some other magnesium forms. This formula contains only Magtein magnesium L-threonate in a pullulan (tapioca-derived) capsule shell, fully vegan and free from fillers or binders, manufactured to GMP and HACCP standards in the UK. Take 4 capsules daily with food, ideally divided between afternoon and evening doses, with the evening portion around 2 hours before bed if using specifically for sleep. Speak to your GP before starting if you take regular medication or have an existing health condition.
