An Important Dosage Note Before You Start
Magnesium Citrate provides 500mg of elemental magnesium per 2-capsule serving — the label’s own figures confirm this. As covered in more detail in our magnesium guide, the UK’s safe upper level for regular, ongoing magnesium intake from supplements is 400mg daily. The standard 2-capsule serving on this product exceeds that limit by around 25%.
A practical way to stay within the UK limit with this product: one capsule daily provides 250mg elemental magnesium — comfortably under the 400mg limit — rather than the two capsules suggested, particularly for ongoing, daily use. The full 2-capsule dose may be more appropriate for occasional, short-term use (for example, magnesium citrate’s well-established use as a gentle laxative for occasional constipation) rather than a default daily amount taken indefinitely.
Magnesium citrate is genuinely one of the better-absorbed forms, and its mild laxative effect at higher doses — working by drawing water into the intestines — is a real, useful property for occasional constipation relief specifically, generally working within 30 minutes to 6 hours. For general daily magnesium support (muscle function, sleep, nervous system function, all established roles), the lower one-capsule dose is more appropriate than the full serving, and magnesium glycinate is generally gentler on digestion if you’re specifically avoiding the laxative effect.
Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, nervous system function, energy-yielding metabolism, and bone maintenance, alongside psychological function — genuine, established roles. If you have kidney disease, check with your GP before starting, since impaired kidneys are less able to clear excess magnesium. If you take bisphosphonate medication (commonly prescribed for osteoporosis) or certain antibiotics, magnesium can significantly reduce their absorption — space doses several hours apart.
Ingredients: magnesium citrate, capsule shell (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), anti-caking agent (magnesium stearate). No artificial colours or flavours. Take capsules with food to help reduce digestive discomfort, starting with a lower dose and increasing gradually if tolerated. Speak to your GP before starting if you have kidney disease, take bisphosphonate medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have an existing health condition — and specifically before taking the full 2-capsule dose on an ongoing daily basis.
