What Milk Thistle Research Actually Shows
This extract is standardised to 80% silymarin at a 40:1 concentration, delivering 50mg per tablet — silymarin being the group of compounds studied for a possible protective role in liver health. As covered in more detail in our liver support guide, it’s important to be accurate about where this evidence actually applies: much of the strongest research involves people with diagnosed liver conditions — hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or liver damage from other causes — studied under medical supervision, rather than general “detoxification” support in someone with an otherwise healthy liver. The liver and kidneys handle elimination of waste products continuously on their own; milk thistle doesn’t add a separate “detox” mechanism on top of that, and this framing doesn’t reflect what the research actually measures.
Research has explored silymarin’s role in liver cell protection against oxidative stress and general antioxidant activity — genuinely interesting findings, though milk thistle is not a treatment for any diagnosed liver condition, and shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care if you have one. If you have a diagnosed liver condition, milk thistle should only be considered alongside your doctor’s guidance, as a possible complement to treatment.
Two safety points worth knowing: milk thistle belongs to the same plant family as ragweed, daisies, and marigolds (Asteraceae), so anyone with an allergy to these plants should be cautious and watch for allergic reactions when trying it for the first time. Milk thistle may also affect liver enzymes involved in processing certain medications, so it’s worth mentioning to your GP or pharmacist if you take regular prescription medication, particularly anything metabolised by the liver.
Ingredients: bulking agents (microcrystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate), milk thistle extract 40:1 (Silybum marianum, seed), anti-caking agents (silicon dioxide, stearic acid, vegetable-sourced magnesium stearate). Manufactured in the UK to GMP standards, vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO. Take two tablets daily with food and water. Speak to your GP before use if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, take regular medication, or have an existing health condition.
