An Important Safety Point Missing From Potassium iodide’s Description
This product provides 400mcg of iodine as potassium iodide per tablet — a standardised, predictable form generally preferable to kelp-based iodine sources, which vary unpredictably. As covered in more detail in our complete iodine guide, iodine has an established, EU-authorised role in normal thyroid hormone production, cognitive function, energy metabolism, and nervous system health — genuine, important roles.
It’s important to add a safety point this product’s description doesn’t mention: excess iodine can disrupt thyroid function in either direction. At 400mcg daily — nearly three times the standard reference intake of around 140-150mcg — taken continuously as this product is marketed (“365 days of continuous support”), this is worth understanding properly rather than assuming “higher strength” is simply better. Sudden or sustained high iodine intake can trigger the Wolff-Chaikoff effect, where the thyroid temporarily reduces hormone production; in people with underlying thyroid disease, this can become persistent hypothyroidism rather than resolving on its own. In people with pre-existing thyroid nodules or latent Graves’ disease, the same excess iodine can instead trigger hyperthyroidism.
If you have a diagnosed thyroid condition, take thyroid medication such as levothyroxine, or have any personal or family history of thyroid problems, this dose warrants a conversation with your GP before starting continuous use — not a general “consult if under medical supervision” caveat, but a specific, genuine consideration given both the dose and duration involved. For general dietary iodine support without a specific reason for a higher dose, a product closer to the standard reference intake may be more appropriate for ongoing daily use.
Ingredients: iodine (as potassium iodide), bulking agents (microcrystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate), anti-caking agents (rice extract blend, silicon dioxide).
