What Astaxanthin Research Actually Shows, at This Specific Dose
This product provides 18mg of natural astaxanthin per softgel, sourced from Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae. As covered in more detail in our complete astaxanthin guide, it’s worth being direct about this dose: most human research showing benefits for eye health and skin protection — astaxanthin’s better-supported areas — used doses in the 4-8mg range. At 18mg, this product provides more than double the upper end of that researched range, and there isn’t established evidence that higher doses produce proportionally greater benefit; more isn’t necessarily better once you’re already within or above the effective research range.
We’d also gently push back on describing astaxanthin as a “miracle supplement” — it’s a genuinely interesting antioxidant with real research behind specific uses, but this framing oversells what any single compound can realistically do. On the skin and “tanned” framing specifically: astaxanthin’s antioxidant properties are studied in relation to skin protection from UV-related oxidative stress, but this is a complement to sunscreen, never a substitute for it — proper sun protection remains essential regardless of astaxanthin use.
Astaxanthin’s research base is genuinely stronger for eye health and skin protection than for general energy or exercise-related claims, where evidence remains more preliminary. It’s fat-soluble, so taking it with a meal containing some fat, as directed, improves absorption.
Vegan (vegetable cellulose and glycerine softgel), free from gluten, lactose, and common allergens, manufactured to GMP standards. Take one softgel daily with a full glass of water, preferably with a meal. Not suitable for under-18s. Speak to your GP before use if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medications, or have an existing health condition.
